A Complete Guide to the UK Ancestry Visa

Updated: Sep 28

Are you a Commonwealth citizen with a grandparent born in the UK? Do you dream of living and working in the United Kingdom, connecting with your roots, and experiencing British life firsthand? The UK Ancestry Visa is one of the most flexible and generous routes to residency and citizenship.

At Nuvora, we specialise in complex nationality claims and bespoke immigration solutions. We understand the excitement—and sometimes the complexities—of tracing your lineage to secure your right to the UK. This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the UK Ancestry Visa, from initial eligibility to achieving permanent settlement.

What is the UK Ancestry Visa?

The UK Ancestry Visa allows eligible individuals to come to the UK for a period of five years. It is unique because it permits you to work, study, and bring your family with you, all without the need for an existing job offer. It grants you the freedom to seek any employment, making it an incredibly flexible way to move to the UK and begin the direct 5-year route to settlement.

Eligibility Requirements: Do You Qualify?

To be eligible for an initial UK Ancestry Visa application, you must meet the following five criteria:

  1. Commonwealth Citizenship: You must be a Commonwealth citizen. This includes nationals of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and many other countries. Certain other nationalities, such as citizens of Zimbabwe and British Nationals (Overseas), are also eligible.

  2. Age: You must be 17 years old or over on the date you intend to travel to the UK.

  3. Grandparent Born in the UK: You must have a grandparent who was born in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man.

    • Note on Ireland: A grandparent born in what is now the Republic of Ireland can only qualify if the birth occurred before 31 March 1922 (i.e., before Irish independence).

    • Ancestry Chain: The link can be maternal or paternal, and can be claimed through adoption.

  4. Intention and Ability to Work: You must demonstrate a genuine intention and ability to seek or take employment in the UK. This is usually proven through a current CV, evidence of job searches, a job offer (if you have one), or a business plan if you intend to be self-employed.

  5. Sufficient Funds: You must be able to support yourself and any dependants financially in the UK without recourse to public funds. There is no fixed minimum financial threshold, but you must provide credible evidence (like bank statements) showing you have access to enough funds for maintenance and accommodation until you secure employment.

The Application Process: Step-by-Step

The UK Ancestry Visa application must be made from outside the UK and involves the following steps:

  1. Gather Your Documents: Compile all necessary birth certificates (yours, your parent's, and your qualifying grandparent's), marriage/adoption certificates (if names have changed or adoption applies), your valid passport, financial evidence, and evidence of your intent to work.

  2. Complete the Online Application Form: Apply via the official UK government website, providing all required personal, financial, and ancestry details.

  3. Pay the Application Fee & IHS: Pay the application fee and the mandatory Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).

  4. Book a Biometrics Appointment: Attend an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in your country of residence to provide your biometric data (fingerprints and photograph).

  5. Submit Documents: Upload or submit your supporting documents as required by the VAC.

  6. Receive a Decision: Standard processing time is generally 3 weeks from your biometrics appointment. Priority service is often available for an additional fee to secure a faster decision (e.g., within 5 working days).

What Does it Cost?

The cost of the UK Ancestry Visa comprises two main fees, payable upfront for the entire five-year grant. Please note: These figures are estimates based on fees as of late 2024/early 2025 and are subject to change.

Fee Type

Amount (Per Adult Applicant)

Visa Application Fee (Entry Clearance)

Approx. £682

Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

Approx. £5,175

Total Estimated Core Cost

Approx. £5,857

  • Additional Costs: TB testing (if required), document translation/legalisation, and optional priority services (approx. £500-£1,000).

Bringing Your Family Members (Dependants)

You may bring your immediate family members (dependants) with you on the UK Ancestry Visa route:

  • Partner: Your husband, wife, or civil partner, or your unmarried partner (if you can prove a two-year relationship akin to marriage).

  • Children: Your child (under 18) or any child over 18 who was previously granted permission as your dependant and is not living an independent life.

Each dependant must make their own application and pay the full application fee and the five-year Immigration Health Surcharge. They are granted the same five-year visa and have the full right to work or study in the UK.

The Path Leading to Settlement

The UK Ancestry Visa provides a highly desirable and direct route to permanent settlement in the UK.

  1. Continuous Residence: After completing five years of continuous residence in the UK on this visa, you are eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) (settlement). You must not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period.

  2. Work Requirement for ILR: You must prove that you have been working or genuinely seeking work throughout the five-year period.

  3. Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK (KoLL): For ILR, you must pass the Life in the UK Test and meet the English language requirement (usually B1 level, unless exempt).

  4. British Citizenship: After holding ILR status for 12 months, you are generally eligible to apply for British Citizenship via naturalisation.
